"ideas worth spreading"

TED Worldwide Talent Search, Johannesburg.

“The Young. The Wise. The Undiscovered.”

The event held on the 3rd of May was an out of this world experience. Proving that South Africans have what it takes and that our “home grown” speakers are world class.

Set in Soweto, the talent search marked a historic moment as TED had scouted the “best of the best” from SA. Guests were greeted at the entrance and the networking began, with coffee, while we all waited in anticipation for the event to start.

The speakers, from a variety of backgrounds, made for an exceptional treat. Their presentations were  peppered with “ideas worth spreading”.

Speaker Bio’s and full programme (all talks to be released in June for voting) below are a few pictures from the auditions:

LUDWICK MARISHANE

Currently rated as the best student entrepreneur in the world (Global Champion of the Global Student Entrepreneurs Awards 2011) and is SA’s youngest patent holder after having invented DryBath™. Google has named him as one of the 12 brightest young minds in the world.

STEVE BARNETT

Steve Barnett is The Silent Conductor who has shared the music orchestrating audiences in over 50 countries on 5 continents with hundreds of thousands of ‘performers’ for the last 15 years.

LUKE TAYLOR

Luke Taylor is a 15-year old high school learner who developed an application that allows robots to be instructed in plain English.

LEE SWAN

Lee Swan is the first South African (and indeed African) woman to reach the Magnetic North Pole.

The audience engagement was great, with them being encouraged to take to the stage and have their say too, with a few celebrities taking to the stage to have their say!

The evening ended with the fantastic performance by the Melodi Music Project and a post-networking reception on a rooftop (http://www.mabonengprecinct.com) in the CBD with fantastic views of Johannesburg.

TEDxSoweto promises to grow from strength to strength. The auditions were extraordinary and the whole event had an aura of excitement and professionalism. We at Experience iT are excited to take TEDxSoweto to the next level.
